choice of embedded operating system.
RedBoot is based on the eCos hardware abstraction layer and offers the
ability to download files via Ethernet or a serial port and to use a
boot script to execute these from the embedded Flash or DRAM.
The Development Kit gives you a wide
range of features to enable you to create low power solutions for
information terminals, instrumentation controllers, data acquisition
systems and communication products. The Development Kit includes the low
power 400MHz VIPER
PC/104 single board computer powered by the
Intel PXA255 RISC processor, fitted with 64Mbytes of DRAM, 32Mbytes of
Intel StrataFlash and 256Kbytes of SRAM. The board is fitted inside a
rugged industrial compact enclosure (VIPER-ICE) and includes a battery
backed uninterruptible power
supply (VIPER-UPS), an external AC PSU,
optional Q-VGA flat panel TFT screen and analog touchscreen, cables to
connect to your host system, and a comprehensive information/software
CD.
Note: The VIPER Development Kit for RedBoot does not include built in support
for the Philips USB controller, onboard SRAM and the board level power
management functions. RedBoot uses either a serial terminal port or
Ethernet for communication to the host development system. RedBoot does
not include any support for the graphics controller or touchscreen, it
is assumed that video driver is handled by your selected embedded
operating system.

| What
is RedBoot? |
| RedBoot
is a complete bootstrap environment for embedded systems. Based on
the eCos RTOS hardware abstraction layer, RedBoot inherits the
eCos qualities of reliability, compactness, configurability, and
portability. RedBoot allows download and execution of embedded
applications via a serial port or Ethernet. It can be used for
both product development (debug support) and in deployed products
in the field (flash update and network booting). Ethernet download
and debug support is included, allowing RedBoot to retrieve its IP
parameters via BOOTP or DHCP, and program images to be downloaded
using TFTP. Images can also be downloaded over serial, using X- or
Y-modem. An
interactive command-line interface is provided to allow management
of the Flash images, image download, RedBoot configuration, etc.,
accessible via serial or ethernet. For unattended or automated
startup, boot scripts can be stored in Flash allowing for example
loading of images from Flash or a TFTP server.
eCos
is an open source, royalty-free, real-time operating system
intended for embedded applications. The highly configurable nature
of eCos allows the operating system to be customized to precise
application requirements, delivering the best possible run-time
performance and an optimized hardware resource footprint. |
