MERLIN
eCos Development Kit - a complete ready-to-run platform for your 386EX
eCos application development.
|
The MERLIN
Development Kit includes the 25MHz i386EX based
MERLIN SBC pre-installed with RedBoot, a fast,
efficient network aware boot
loader – ideal for quickly debugging and updating your eCos
applications. RedBoot is based on eCos and offers the ability
to download files via Ethernet or a serial port and to use a
boot script to execute these from the embedded Flash or DRAM.
The
Development Kit is supplied with eCos sources for the MERLIN and host development tools to enable you to develop your eCos application on
Linux or Windows based host PCs. There are a wide range of features to
enable you to create small footprint solutions for data acquisition
systems, communication products and network aware embedded devices.

| What
is RedBoot? |
|
RedBoot
is a complete bootstrap environment for embedded systems. Based on
the eCos RTOS hardware abstraction layer, RedBoot inherits the
eCos qualities of reliability, compactness, configurability, and
portability.
RedBoot
allows download and execution of embedded applications via a
serial port or Ethernet. It can be used for both product
development
(debug support) and in deployed products in the field (flash
update and network booting). Ethernet download and debug support
is included, allowing RedBoot to retrieve its IP parameters via
BOOTP or DHCP, and program images to be downloaded using TFTP or
HTTP.
Images can also be downloaded over serial, using X- or Y-modem.
An
interactive command-line interface is provided to allow management
of the Flash images, image download, RedBoot configuration, etc.,
accessible
via serial or Ethernet. For unattended or automated startup, boot
scripts can be stored in Flash allowing, for example, the loading
of images from Flash or a TFTP server.

| What
is eCos? |
|
eCos
is an open source, royalty-free, real-time operating system
intended for embedded applications. The highly configurable nature
of
eCos allows the operating system to be customized to precise
application requirements, delivering the best possible run-time
performance and an optimized hardware resource footprint.
eCos
includes a full-featured TCP/IP network stack including:
BOOTP/DHCP, DNS, TFTP/FTP SNMP, IPv6, HTTP server. ISO C and math
libraries and POSIX API compatibility are provides to aid in
porting
existing
application or in writing new ones.
